Abstract

As is the case with most Renaissance literature, concern with order and degree is the ultimate theme of Shakespeare's "The Tempest." In the play, this concern is exemplified through the pattern of crime, repentance, and reconciliation. The Renaissance commonplaces regarding cosmological order are complex and numerous. First, some of these commonplaces will be dealt with, and then, how they operate in "The Tempest" will be demonstrated.
