Abstract

Is the comic book a menace to the elementary reading program or can it be put to good use in the class room? Interested teachers all over the country are asking, "What can I do about the comic books?" For they know the tremendous fascination they hold for boys and girls. It is one form of reading that slow readers take to without coaxing. The modern trend is toward the visual aid in both education and recreation. Hence, even the superior student indulges in this form of pastime as means of gaining information. Shall we, therefore, encourage the reading of comics and bring them into the school as a means of instruction? Prudence suggests analyzing them as to construction and possible uses. There appears to be a need to investigate the grade level of the various types of comics enjoyed by the average child.
