Abstract
When the battle of Fort Donelson was over and men sat around the fires retelling the events of the encounter, one name repeatedly came to their lips--that of Charles F. Smith. He was the one who so gallantly led the assault which broke the back of the Confederates and forced them to surrender unconditionally to Brigadier General U.S. Grant , commanding officer of the Union troops . This paper will examine Smith's military career in the United States Army; special note will be taken of his participation in the Battle of Fort Donelson.
