Abstract
When the platelet count of a patient or animal is greatly reduced, petechial and purpuric hemorrhages may appear in the skin and mucous membranes indicating a loss of integrity of the terminal vascular bed. This escape of erythrocytes from the capillaries, related to the low platelet level, is called the thrombocytopenic lesion. Although there is much interest in this area because thrombocytopenia is the major cause of bleeding in individuals exposed to whole body irradiation., no one has described the mechanism by which the red blood cells escape from the capillaries. It is the purpose of this study to describe the thrombocytopenic lesion using ultrastructural techniques.
