Abstract

The demand for a reasonably accurate aid in the diagnosis of diseases of the liver has long been apparent. The varied manifestations of hepatic disease, together with the fact that none of the liver function tests available at the present time is uniformly reliable or diagnostic, constitute the principle causes of difficulty in diagnosis. This is especially true when there is a minimal or moderate functional impairment. The problem is well illustrated in almost every instance of prolonged jaundice in which it is imperative to determine whether the etiology is intra or extra-hepatic in order to institute the proper therapy. Another problem frequently encountered is that of portal cirrhosis, the manifestations of which may be overlooked or are extremely difficult to evaluate, especially in early cases or in the presence of disease of the heart and/or kidneys.
