Abstract

This paper is a historical study of the origins end development of the machine tool industry in the United States. The first part of the paper pertains to the beginnings of machine tool production end subsequent growth to industry status. An attempt is made to examine conditions prevailing at that time which contributed to the development of the machine tool industry in the United States. Industry growth is examined at intervals thereafter. The advent of the Numerically Controlled (N.C.) machining center during the l960's was the first radical change in machining concepts since machine tools were developed. Although the full impact has not yet been felt by the industry, it would appear that this concept is going to have a pronounced effect upon the machine tool industry. The direction of change is predicted end somewhat substantiated, however the degree of change is yet to be reflected in industry statistics. The trend is expected to continue and to gain momentum. The industry appears to be changing its stance from a structure and performance standpoint although figures a.re not available to validate this claim.
