Abstract
The problem as hereinafter discussed is the generalization of the problem of using the photo-elastic method to facilitate the plotting of electric fields as suggested by Dr. Pettit of the mathematics department, Marquette University, Milwaukee. When analyzed, the suggested problem was so easily generalized that it was thought best to study the generalized problem using the electric field as a special case. This plan was followed in this paper. It thus forms a background upon which the plotting of the electric field can be studied as special case, something which was only briefly taken up in this paper.
Although the author realizes that the theory of elasticity is not a subject of widespread interest or knowledge, no detailed explanation of the various equations taken from this theory has been included herein inasmuch as any such explanation would merely reiterate what has been very clearly and concisely written by several authorities on the subject. References to these works has been incorporated in the paper and should any further knowledge be desired on the subject, these should be consulted.
