Abstract

In recent years, with the emergence of a strong interest in Hermeneutics as it applies to Sacred Scripture, theologians have become more aware of the Hermeneutical problem with respect to Dogma. It has been observed that one cannot simply repeat Scriptural passages to the faithful of today without making clear that their meaning make sense only if they are first understood within the cultural setting they were written. The awareness of the historical gap which lies between the cultural situation in which the writing of Scripture took place and the present one has led to the insight that such a time difference must also be dealt with in respect to dogma. Dogmas also must be understood in the particular contexts in which they were first stated in order that they may be reinterpreted so as to become meaningful for the present day.
