Abstract

Ernest Bernbaum, in his introduction to the selections by William Hazlitt in Anthology of Romanticism, stated that Hazlitt was the greatest practitioner of criticism during the Romantic period. This was readily proven by a superficial examination of The Complete Works of William Hazlitt edited by P. P. Howe. There were twenty-one very sizeable volumes containing the papers, essays, and criticism of a man who did not begin to write seriously until he was forty. Hazlitt did not consider writing as a career or himself a writer till he found that he could not support himself as an artist or a philosopher.
