Abstract

The study described in this paper evaluates the effectiveness of Capital Grant on Public Transportation of the City of Madison, Madison, Wisconsin, for the five year period (1970-1975).

The study focuses attention to the quality of transit service in the city by studying various factors such as ridership, comfort and convenience, frequency of service, reliability, fare structure, travel time, elderly citizen services, and student services. The effects of these factors on the quality of service are documented by various data and graphical presentations.

The results of the study showed that the Capital Grant has great impacts on the improvement of Public Transportation and survival of transit system. The Capital Grant provided urgently needed funds, for the operational and physical improvements of public transit in the City of Madison. The study recommends that the Capital Grant should be continued and recognizes that the Capital Grant was a vital factor in survival of public transportation in the City of Madison.
