Abstract

Since the writer's arrival at the United States, she has been able for the first time to experience personally the western way of life. During the initial period of her visit, the writer had frequently felt the impact of conflicts between the Oriental and Occidental cultures, especially in the non-material aspect. There are thousands of Chinese immigrants to the United States each year, the writer felt it was important to know something of their adjustment in the American culture. From the standpoint of immigrant, it is apparent that they face problems in culture adjustment.

The study of Chinese groups in Milwaukee could be meaningful to the two major Chinese unions in Milwaukee, namely the Chinese Civic Club and the Chinese Students Association, in the development of their future work with their membership. I also felt that the results of our study could be valuable to those Chinese immigrants whoever have problems in dealing with the new culture and new environment. I felt that it may give them an understanding of how the world looks and feels to the newcomer.
