Abstract

In December 1959, Johnson's Wax installed its first electronic data processor, an NCR-304 Magnetic Tape Computer. Prior to this time, data processing was done by an IBM punched card tabulating system. Before converting to the computer, a Western Union Teletype network connecting Racine with its 23 field warehouses was installed. Punched paper tape prepared in the field was transmitted to Racine to be processed by the computer. The computer in return prepared punched paper tape that was relayed back to the field.
