Abstract

Any examination of the choice that Adam and Eve make in Book IX of Paradise Lost necessitates an understanding of the motivations which prompted " ••• Man ' s First Disobedience . " The pre-lapsarian state of Adam and Eve found them actively good yet potentially good and evil . The introduction of evil into Paradise, the gradual aware ness of it by Adam and Eve was a necessary prelude for their ability to make a conscious choice.
