Abstract

Prior to the disaster at Fort Donelson, Simon Buckner's career had been characterized by industriousness, dedication, and, above all, integrity. Far from being responsible for the surrender of Fort Donelson, Buckner stands out as the victim of the vindictiveness, conceit, and egotism of General Gideon J. Pillow. By passing command to Buckner, Pillow deliberately intended to militarily ruin the man he "cordially hated."
