Abstract
Theologians, in recent decades, have focused their attention and made possible a fuller and more balanced view of the sacramental order . They have been regaining and developing the patristic view of sacrament : specifically, the view of St. Augustine , which was vital in Western theology until into the Middle Ages . In t he thirteenth century St . Thomas deepened insights into a rich structure of sacramental principles and incorporated them in his Summa .
