Abstract
Before considering the unification of Italy it is well to cast a glance backward, for the present civilization owes a debt to Italy . Among the peoples of Europe none is older than the Italian in its existence as a distinct unit . Her language, law, culture, and religion were the basic elements for nearly a thousand years . Emerging from kings she became an Empire under the Republic . When she could no longer conquer with her legions she conquered with the Cross .
