Abstract

Throughout Shakespeare's great plays, especially in the tragedies, a profound insight continually directs his thinking. This insight is a sense of the order and equilibrium which must prevail in the universe. The tragedies end on a symbolic note that a better order will prevail through the destruction of evil, that balance and harmony will reign once again with the triumph of good. Fortinbras follows Hamlet, Albany follows Lear, Malcolm follows Macbeth.
