Abstract

Within the dialogue of Waiting for Godot, Beckett "subtly" suggests through the repartee of Vladimir and Estragon a rather "negative" view of the critic and hence criticism. Seemingly, in a traditional perspective, the critic is regarded as an "abuser." At the same time however, he may be the one abused. Thus it is this writer's aim to present as far as possible an accurate study of the critic's criticism of Henry James' The American.
