Abstract

This essay reviews the issues that are important to designers of interactive languages. Considering the differences between static (batch) languages and interactive languages, the need for a more formalized, user-oriented design process for interactive language is discussed. Capabilities that an interactive language should provide are presented, along with references to actual implementations.
