Abstract

In a certain sense Cayley numbers and quaternions over the reals are generalizations of complex numbers. One can define complex numbers by means of ordered pairs of real numbers. (They can also be obtained by adjoining an imaginary solution i of the equation x2+ l = 0 to the real numbers.) Furthermore one can represent a complex number as a point in the plane. This is where the actual history of Cayley numbers begins.
