Abstract

Until recently, medical research was limited largely to the needs of individuals in the first three decades of life. This limitation was the heritage of a time of relatively short life expectancy, when so small a proportion of the population survived beyond middle age that, as a group, it was scarcely visible and posed few if any general social and medical problems. Further, the life styles of pre-industrial cultures afforded roles and care for the members of the older generations with a minimum of intervention on the part of health agencies outside the family.
