Abstract

In the early eighteenth century European political influence in the Middle East and India was still light. The Ottoman, Persian and Mogul Empires were still relatively strong; and though Western Europe was now well in advance of the stagnating East in technical skill and in the quality of its manufactures, its traders still lived in these lands as clients, dependent on the good-will of the Oriental rulers and officials. Their insecurity led them to at least a loose unity, and even the outbreak of a general war in Europe did not greatly affect their mutual relations.
