Abstract

From almost the moment that Israel declared its independence on May 14, 1948, the French government embarked on a policy of scientific, technological, financial, and military cooperation with the new state. During the early and mid 195Os this cooperation increased as France became Israel's primary source of war material. The Fourth Republic, in turn, relied upon Israel as a base of influence within the Middle East. Because of the continuing conflict with Algeria the French had alienated the remainder of the Arab world, and so were associated with the Israeli's through necessity rather than choice .
