Abstract

The discovery of coal- tar dyes and the subsequent building up of the vast synthetic dye industry was the result of chance. In 1856 Perkins, a young English chemist, while experimenting obtained a coloring matter by the oxidation of aniline. He manufactured it and sold it under the name of "mauve", and while the dye was of no great practical importance, its discovery was the incentive for much exciting research in quest of new colors.
