Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to present and evaluate the thesis that Luther's doctrine of grace is the direct result of his own personal reaction to and interaction with the religious and theological milieu of his time. This religious and theological milieu includes the teachings and influence of his home, school, monastery and university the impact of humanism with its emphasis upon Hebrew and Greek and a more critical study of the scriptures, and the several seemingly chance circumstances of his life which were to greatly affect Luther's theological thinking.
