Abstract
There has been merger activity in this country for the last 100 years. Hospital mergers have been prevalent in the current wave of merger activity. Whatever the reason or good intention for merger, it is evident that several of them do not do well. The human element has been indicated as one cause for merger failure. Emotional/psychological trauma, communication, culture and change have been cited as factors in the success/failure of mergers. Guidelines are developed to aid a nurse administrator manage nursing staffs when two hospitals merge. These include; setting goals, communicating, directing and dealing with hospital cultures.
