Abstract
Fifty percent of all first marriages terminate by the eighth year, a time when families typically are rearing young children. Within a period of about 15 years, many adults and children experience at least three and sometimes four different family forms: intact, single-parent household, remarriage, and again single parent household via divorce. There is a need for schools to become informed and responsive to changing family forms. The stepfamily ls one such form.
