Abstract
The first purpose of this essay is to look at Trent's understanding of transubstantiation and then to turn to some recent developments in Eucharistic theology. In order that account be taken of the centuries of debate and prayerful work underlying the formulations of the Council, background materials are interspersed. These background materials contain an explanation of the Aristotelian concept of substance and accident because the Tridentiae fathers thought within this general framework. And then to comprehend the work of theologians today we need to understand the thought patterns of Trent.
