Abstract

Machaerium arboreum (Leguminosae), a liana a Panamanian lowland forests, sheds water from upper leaflet surfaces through thigmonastic and nyctinastic leaf movements. Experiments show that leaflets with acuminate tips have an improved water-shedding ability.
