Abstract

The main natural sources for the manufacture of canastos are the stems of four taxa of lianas (woody vines) from the Bignoniaceae family, which grows in the tropical forests of Central America. Pilot studies on the Coto Brus Forest Reserve have demonstrated that if the appropriate resources are properly managed, tropical forests can generate substantial market benefits.
