Abstract
Nursing leaders increasingly recognize that, in today's complex healthcare environment, nurses are a crucial revenue-generating human capital asset, not just a costly labor input. In this article, the authors discuss nursing leadership strategies to amplify nursing's economic value to healthcare organizations.
Organizational leaders must spearhead efforts to maximize nursing's economic value, because this is essential for securing and maintaining a productive nursing workforce. Nurse executives have long recognized that nursing is not merely “labor” but a profession composed of talented, knowledgeable individuals who contribute to organizational success on every level. Each nurse brings a unique portfolio of “human capital”—knowledge, skills, and abilities—to patient care. As the largest group of personnel within a healthcare organization nurses must not be viewed as commodities but rather for their unique contributions, which should be cultivated, motivated, and rewarded.
