Abstract
This video is a recording of Bembé Drum & Dance’s Journey across the Atlantic Viajando el Atlantico. It was performed on June 3, 2022 at the Tony & Lucille Weasler Auditorium at Marquette University in Milwaukee WI. The cast included Bembé youth and adult students, teaching artists Imani Jalil and Bony Plog-Benavides, Masters Artist-in-Residence Alberto “Beto” Torrens and many special guest musicians.
The show was a community celebration of Afro-Latino culture featuring rhythms and dance. Celebrando la cultura Afro-Latina con Kuku, Bata, Rumba, Garabato, Cumbia, Samba, Bomba, Salsa, pop y más.
Bembé is a community-based, cultural performing arts program in the city of Milwaukee that inspires music and performance skills, intergenerational connection and cultural identity exploration through Afro-Latino culture www.proyectobembe.org.
Bembé Drum & Dance and Marquette University are community engagement partners led by Johanna de los Santos, Founding Director and Board President, and Dr. Kristin Haglund, Professor in the College of Nursing and the Rev. John P. Raynor, S.J. Endowed Chair.
