Abstract

The present paper deals with an important aspect within Husserl's late reflections upon the reduction: that of the splitting of the ego. Two forms of the splitting of the Ego will be distinguished. The first can be described as "natural" and occurs within the natural attitude. The second and more radical form of splitting of the Ego is the reduction itself, which "splits" it "apart" into a natural and a transcendental Ego. Or so it seems at first. The higher-order reflection within the reduction, however, reveals this splitting to be an improper one; for, according to Husserl, the reduction has in truth the meaning of firstly revealing the Ego in its full "concretion."
