Abstract
Ammianus Marcellinus has been termed an uncritical, biased, and ineffective historian. However, it is the contention of this study that this historian was one of the first truly scientific historians, that he employed a sound critical method, and that the results of his research and critical method are valid. To accomplish this end, this study will concentrate upon the historian's own writings and those of his critics to determine the manner in which the historian collected and assessed his material, interpreted it, and presented it to his audience. The presentation of the results of the historian's research will be considered in detail to determine the author's purpose in writing history and the degree of accuracy and trust with which the historian presented to his audience such facts as were most suited to that purpose.
