Abstract
The problem which this thesis attempts to prove is that although numerous attacks on the stage have been made by playerpoets, preachers and other reformers, the effect of these attacks on the improvement and moral uplift of the stage was almost negligible, because most of these so called reformers were actuated, not by ideals of reform, but by ulterior motives.
