Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze Coventry Patmore's philosophy of marriage as it is expressed in his poem, The Angel in the House, with its sequel, The Victories of Love. The poet's mystical development of the subject, The Unknown Eros, will not enter into the discussion. A further purpose of this study is to examine the opinions of Patmore's leading literary contemporaries concerning his poetry of nuptial love. This consideration however, is limited to English contemporary criticism.
