Abstract
Our problem is to sum up in a detailed and concrete fashion and to evaluate the evidence for and against the authenticity of the Moretum; to see if any solidly supported conclusions can be drawn; and to present the material gathered in a well rounded treatise. Much of the material which treats of the Vergilian appendix has been presented by various authors in such a manner as to demonstrate a pre-conceived conclusion. Our purpose is to treat of the Moretum "sine ira et studio;" to examine sympathetically the arguments both for and against the authenticity of this poem and to arrive at an unbiased conclusion. Since the Moretum is found in the list of poems of the Vergilian appendix, the main body of the thesis will be concerned with the ascription of this poem to Vergil. Other ascriptions, however, will receive due treatment.
