Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to compare the quantity of Catholic news in three secular Cleveland newspapers and one Cleveland Catholic newspaper in order to learn from which source in Cleveland the Catholic reader can gain the most information of the days' events relating to the Catholic Church. It intends to discover if the Catholic newspaper presents its readers any information beyond that carried by the secular press, or if the secular newspapers present news over and above that in the Catholic paper, and if so to what extent. This thesis attempts further to determine, as far as possible, whether the Catholic newspaper fails to satisfy its readers' need for the Catholic viewpoint on news reported in the secular papers, the ultimate purpose being to ascertain just how useful the Catholic newspaper is and to what extent Catholics of a certain community can rely upon it to give them news about which they are concerned.
