Abstract
The purpose of this study is to place Chaplin's popularity with leftist critics in the context of the leftist ideology that saw its maximum popularity in the first half of this century. To achieve this, this ideology will be described and, following that, it will be shown how a great deal of what was written about Chaplin fit into this leftist vision.
