Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of Rufus King and his Milwaukee Sentinel on the founding of the Republican Party in Wisconsin. It has been claimed by historian A. M. Thomsen that King's paper "led the movement which resulted in the formation of the Republican party in the Northwest. By making a close examination of King's editorial stance and indications of influence, together with his background and experiences, the author will attempt to assess his part in establishing the new party , and in so doing, to support Thomsen's claim.
