Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to make an evaluative study of Alfred Emanuel Smith as an orator. The subject merits this treatment because of several factors. Many contemporary collections of oratory contain his speeches. His oral expression has awayed thousands. A sufficient amount of controversial evidence is in existence to warrant an evaluation. And up to the present time no study of any serious length has been made of Smith as an orator. It is not the purpose of this paper, however, to vindicate the political career of Mr. Smith. This will not be a study of his success or failure as a politician nor will it discuss why he lost the Presidential election. Biographies have been written; chapters in books of political review have been compiled; magazine articles have been lavish in praise and blame; but this paper will aim at judging the man as an orator.
