Abstract
It is the purpose of this thesis not only to bring forth from the literature those standards which in fact do exist, but also to use them as the foundation for a test instrument which is capable of measuring the presence or absence of such qualities within specific news stories. Further, it is the work of the study to show that journalism education has the responsibility to encourage student journalists to emulate these standards in practice so they can later uphold them when engaging in their profession. Finally, it is the goal of the thesis to test the pilot instrument by applying it to the Journalism Awards Program sponsored annually by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation for accredited members of the American Association of Schools and Departments of Journalism.
