Abstract
Upward evaluation is an organization-sanctioned opportunity for subordinates to evaluate the performance of their leaders in a way which protects their anonymity. It provides a unique opportunity for leaders to see themselves as their subordinates see them. Upward evaluation can be a powerful tool for improving executive performance and enhancing communication within organizations. This thesis describes a field project in which an upward evaluation was conducted in a midwestern company, using long interviews to solicit subordinate assessments of a leader's performance.
