Abstract
The role of the newspaper film critic in the public's reception of a work of art - the commercial motion picture - needs exploring. The rising interest in films and filmmakers today gives the critic a wider audience, and a more discerning one. But reviews must maintain certain basic norms if they are to be of use. This study will define these norms, and then see how 'quality' critics in the United States fulfill them. The quantitative analysis will throw light on the cultural gate-keeping function of a newspaper.
