Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to ascertain the principles of criticism held by five distinguished American drama critics. The men on whom this study will focus are George Jean Nathan, dean of American drama critics for the past thirty years, author of over thirty books on the American theatre, and dramatic critic of the American Mercury, as well as syndicated drama columnist for a number of newspapers; Joseph Wood Krutch, member of the faculty of Columbia University, author of the critical volume, the American Drama Since 1918; and dramatic critic of the Nation for over twenty-five years; John Mason Brown, former dramatic critic for the New York Evening Post and the New York World Telegram, not associate editor and dramatic critic of the Saturday Review of Literature, author of a number of books on the theatre; Brooks Atikinson, drama critic of the New York Times for the past fifteen years; and Theophilus Lewis, drama critic of America.
