Abstract
The theory of Lie rings is a recent development growing from studies of Lie algebras. As a result of its background, the theory of Lie rings is available only in scattered sources, generally as an aside in papers on Lie algebras. Therefore, there is no overall, coherent material available on Lie rings. This paper is an attempt to present a unified development of Lie rings. To do this, first the set of postulates for a Lie ring will be given and from these will be deduced several general results concerning Lie rings. Next we will consider the Lie ring of various associative rings and the effect of the type of ring on the type of Lie rings obtained as well as invariance of certain other properties of a ring.
