Abstract
A variational method. namely the Rayleigh-Ritz method, is developed to solve Bloch equations for nuclear magnetic relaxation of protons In water contained In a porous medium. The method Is based on establishing an equivalent variational equation to the original differential equations and boundary conditions and selecting a suitable set of trial functions to minimize the associated functional. Application to the case of a single sphere In a water filled cubical region Is studied In more detail. The system can be extended to a suspension of spheres In water. The accuracy of the variational method Is discussed from a general perspective.
