Abstract

The depth of the square well potential that produces a resonance or bound state is studied in this thesis, with use of the Dirac equation. This thesis consists of two parts. The first part is based on the notes taken in a seminar on theoretical physics given by Dr. Tani, and they constitute Chapters 2 and 3. The first part, Chapters 2 and 3, is included to make the basic elements of the Dirac equation easily accessible even to a relatively unprepared reader who may undertake a thesis research on a related subject in the future. The second part is the square well calculation based on the Dirac equation, constituting Chapters 4 and 5. Chapter 1 is the introduction that explains the objective of the thesis. The Hamiltonian of the Dirac equation is discussed in Chapter 2. The mathematical details needed to understand the essential elements of the Dirac equation are discussed in Chapter 3. In Chapter 4, the radial Dirac equation is discussed for both bound and scattering states. Chapter 5 is devoted to the presentation and discussion of the results.
