Abstract

The charge-transfer phenomenon is now receiving considerable attention, being intimately involved in processes occurring in the area of molecular electronics and nanotechnology, such as (photo)conductivity, ferromagnetism, and non-linear optical response in various organic materials. The purpose of this thesis is to describe the design of suitable structures bearing cofacially oriented aromatic rings, the development of a versatile novel synthesis for the preparation of stilbenoid hydrocarbons, and the study of the synthesized structures as receptors for nitric oxide and other small guest molecules such as metal cations.
