Abstract
Disproportionation reactions of elemental bromine and iodine have been conducted, in the presence of the Lewis base silver fluoride, in anhydrous HF. The products were bromine trifluoride and silver bromide in the case of bromine; and iodine pentafluoride and silver iodide in the case of iodine. The products, BrF3 and IF5 were identified spectroscopically. The yield of BrF3 was 43 percent and IF 5, 82 percent. Both reactions were found to take place readily at room temperature in Teflon ware.
